Kerala, God’s Own Country, is a state that welcomes tourists from around the world. It is a favorite destination for adventure lovers, honeymoon couples, people on vacation, nature lovers etc.
Among the many places of siteseeing, one of the most famous places is the wildlife reserves of the Periyar forests in Thekkady. Thekkady tour can be a thrilling experience. It is famous for its elephants, unending chains of hills and spice scented plantations. Besides the rich wildlife, the place is also famous for its picturesque plantations and hill towns that offer lot of trekking and mountain walks for adventurous tourists. The famous plantations in this place are tea, cardamom, pepper and coffee. A large number of flowering plants as much as 1965 varieties are found in this place. The forest of Periyar Tiger Reserve is the only place where the South Indian conifer Podocarpus wallichianus is found. Thirty five species of mammals are found in the forests which include Asian elephant, Indian bison, sambar deer, Indian wild dog, barking deer, smooth coated otter etc. Some of these animals can be spotted during a boat cruise in the Periyar Lake. One can have a glimpse of the Nilgiri Tahr in the hilly rocky areas and the endangered lion tailed macaque in the interior evergreen forests. Malabar giant squirrel is also seen in many places. 265 species of birds are seen in this region including migrants. They include the Malabar Grey Hornbill, the Indian Pied Hornbill, Whitebellied Treepie, various species of drongos, woodpeckers, babblers, flycatchers, the beautiful Malabar Trogon etc.
